Does your list of New Year’s resolutions include a home redesign? 2019 is shaping up to be a fascinating year for interior design, with several unique and surprising trends taking the stage. Here’s what to expect.

1. Back to Basics: Traditional Designs

Sleek, minimalist spaces are still plentiful, but there’s a definite trend towards a more traditional aesthetic. In some cases, this takes the form of:

  • Vintage rugs
  • Floral wallpaper
  • Victorian era furniture
  • Four-poster beds
  • Elegant wood craftsmanship

In other cases, this back-to-basics approach might simply be more of a return to classic, functional layouts and elements, especially in the kitchen. As interior designer Anne Hepfer puts it: “Kitchens are being pared down to allow raw materials to shine on their own. Think wood, stone, shiplap, and jute.”

2. Green Hues

Richer, darker colors have been making a comeback, and green will be an especially big color next year. Expect deeper greens that are calming and evocative of nature. For example, PPG has announced a lush green/teal called “Night Watch” as its color of the year for 2019.

If you’re thinking of including bold patterns, sleek shapes, or modern materials in your design, a gentle green color is a great way to keep your space feeling grounded.

3. Hints of Art Deco

Mid-century design has certainly carved out its space in recent years. While mid-century styles aren’t going anywhere fast, you can expect to see influences from an even earlier time in 2019, as more and more homeowners are harkening back to the art deco glamor of the 1920s.

You probably won’t see the full scale opulence of a Great Gatsby-esque mansion, but subtle details carefully woven into homes instead. This style is ornate, geometrical, and sometimes industrial, but always with an elegant feel. Common motifs are symmetry and repeating patterns. Think modern with a slightly regal, exotic feel.

4. Comfort Is In

Bring on the plush sofas, soft rugs, and cushy throw pillows. 2019 is all about materials that are cozy and soft to the touch.

One form this trend is taking is the resurgence of boho elements, even in more modern spaces. There’s something innately comfortable about the natural materials, layered fabrics, and overall relaxed feel in a boho-inspired room.

To bring more comfort to a kitchen or bathroom, think about mixing in some warm colors, patterned fabrics, and natural wood or tile. Plant life helps too.

5. Abstract Art and Patterns

Don’t be fooled by the renewed popularity of traditional interior design — 2019 will also bring lots of bold patterns, abstract art, and unique shapes. It can sometimes be difficult to bring in these kinds of striking design elements in a way that feels balanced and not overpowering, but when done right, the result is stunning!

It can also be a great way to add interest to a room that seems to be lacking that little something extra.
