Before and After Bathroom Transformation

by | Apr 5, 2021 | Bathroom Design

If you’ve decided to revamp your master or guest bathroom and are looking for design inspiration, we’ve got you covered with this recent award-winning Portland bathroom remodel. With stunning, bold geometric tile as the focal point of the space and complimentary updates throughout, we were able to transform this homeowner’s guest bath into a modern yet timeless oasis.

Keep reading to see the before-and-after images of a bathroom transformation that won us the  PNW NARI Best Bath between 25K and 50K, and discover how we fundamentally reshaped this bathroom space without altering its layout by employing intelligent design solutions and careful attention to detail.

Same Footprint, Whole New Look

For this award-winning project, we removed and replaced all fixtures and finishes in their existing locations, without altering the guest bathroom’s floor plan. This helped keep our plumbing and electrical costs to a minimum, allowing us to invest in high-quality materials and focus our attention on the overall aesthetic value of the space while adhering to the budget.

This is an excellent rule to follow in general for home remodels — don’t spend precious time and money fixing what isn’t broken. There’s no need to knock down walls or relocate essential plumbing if your room’s layout already functions well and meets your family’s needs.

Instead, leave your floor plan as it is unless an issue needs resolving; instead, save room in your budget for top-quality fixtures, finishes, and even artwork and decor that you truly love. You can also add smart devices and features to make your life simpler and easier, and your home more energy-efficient.

Design Features of The Space

Bathrooms are too often neglected spaces in our homes when it comes to design. But they’re unique and essential elements of our homes and daily routines, and they deserve the same design attention as bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens. At L. Evans Design Group, our process is focused on creating spaces throughout your home that are truly designed for you and your family’s lifestyle, and bathrooms are no exception.

Here are a few of the design features we used to bring this formerly outdated guest bathroom to life:

Geometric Tile Flooring

The guest bath’s old flooring was in desperate need of an upgrade. Our clients wanted a “WOW” factor for this space. We delivered with this gorgeous Italian geometric patterned tile flooring, which added instant creative flair, elegance, and dimension, becoming the catalyst for the design of the entire bathroom.

By identifying a focal point, we anchored the space, allowing the other elements of the room to fall into place and complement the bold and beautiful tile.

Floating Double-Sink Vanity Space

This area of the guest bathroom lacked interest and felt claustrophobic. We brightened up the whole space with a complete redesign that complemented the eye-catching geometric flooring.

Here’s what we did with this space:

  • Vanity: First, we raised the height of the countertops by installing a sleek new floating vanity in a dark finish, which anchored the space and patterned floor tile; the raised height creates horizontal depth, elongating and widening the space visually.
  • Mirror & Sconces: The room’s large mirror had to be replaced to accommodate the increased height of the vanity. This provided an opportunity to include new light sconces in an oil-rubbed bronze finish that illuminate the space much more evenly.
  • Countertops: We sourced a gorgeous “Perla Venata” Quartzite countertop remnant from our fabricator’s bone yard to contrast and complement the darker finishes in the bathroom and reflect light upward.
  • Sinks & Faucets: Our client selected top-mount Kohler sinks in white with satin-nickel Hans Grohe faucets, which complete the vanity space nicely.
  • Decor: Artwork, bath towels, and finishing decor were kept simple and elegant, allowing the geometric flooring and complementary fixtures and finishes to take center stage in this area of the room.

Tiled Walk-In Shower

The gorgeous new tiled shower is a standout design feature in this space. The previous guest shower added no excitement to the room and felt drab and small. We opened up the space by removing the shower door — no door was needed due to the extra-depth shower walls — and installed Italian distressed 12” x 24” format tile in the shower. We also carried companion deco tile into the walk-in shower to peak interest and complement the bold Italian floor pattern.

The removal of the shower door not only made stepping in and out convenient and cleaning a breeze, but it also adds design intrigue and a sense of luxury to the space. Even better, it creates an elongated vertical line that draws the eye up, which makes the ceilings feel higher and the whole room more spacious.
