6 Amazing Ways to Bring Color into Your Living Room

by | Aug 5, 2019 | Home Design

Is your living space feeling a little lackluster or drab? One of the best ways to revamp your home and give it a new, fresh feeling is to add some color! Maybe you’re looking to create a bright, colorful oasis with neon wall colors and furniture, or maybe you just want to add a few pops of color to an otherwise calming, neutral living space.

If you’re looking for ways to add color and vibrancy to your living room, but you’re not sure where to start, check out these fun living room color ideas to get inspired.

1. Choose Vibrant Living Room Furniture Colors

One of the simplest ways to introduce color into your living room is to add a piece or two of vibrant furniture. Whether you go bold and opt for a bright red sectional couch or keep it subtle with a sky blue armchair, colorful furniture adds instant charm and cheerfulness to a room.

Vibrant furniture is a great first step if you’re looking to add more color in the future, since it can inspire you to consider what other colorful design elements (like curtains, rugs, pillows, or art) would pair well with your furniture.

2. Paint the Inside of a Bookshelf

If you’re looking for a subtle but unique way to incorporate color, try painting the insides of any bookshelves you have in your living room. This is a super low-risk, low-cost way to give unusual or very bright colors a try since you can always paint over any colors you don’t like.

You can choose anything from a soft green or blue to a bold, bright yellow. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, try color blocking with several contrasting or complementary colors and paint each shelf its own striking color.

3. Fill the Space with Plants

Who said bringing color into your space has to mean bright primary colors? There are many ways to add color, and incorporating plants, flowers, or greenery adds unique colors and textures, as well as a serene atmosphere that’s hard to replicate with furniture or paint colors.

Plants look great paired with just about anything, from crisp whites and blacks, to neons, to pastels. Here are a few other ways to use natural colors in your space:

  • Wicker baskets or chairs
  • Landscape paintings or photographs
  • Natural wood
  • Pinecones
  • Exposed brick or stone
  • Metallics

4. Opt for Bright, Colorful Art

Eye-catching wall art, statuettes, and pottery are all great ways to introduce pops of color. They can also act as a great source of inspiration for the rest of your living room’s design.

For example, perhaps you have a favorite piece of art that you’ve had and loved for years. Take a look at it and think about what you love so much. What colors are incorporated into the art? Are there ways you can integrate these colors into other elements of your living room?

Wall art is a wonderful design tool because it helps define the identity of your space and reflect your personality through your home. It’s also very versatile. For example, you can choose one large piece to act as the backdrop for your entire living room, or you can create a gallery wall and weave color throughout the room in smaller doses.

5. Incorporate Color with Rugs, Pillows, and Throw Blankets

If you’re not ready to commit to a brightly colored couch just yet, give color a try with less expensive, smaller design elements in your space. For example, adorn your sofa with a few blue and yellow cushions or opt for a multicolored area rug. Just make sure the colors you choose don’t clash with any existing elements in your living room.

6. Use Mirrors to Reflect Color and Light

Mirrors add a touch of elegance and sophistication to any room and, if positioned correctly, they can be used to highlight the colorful elements in your room. Place them across from an accent wall or put colorful flowers or lamps in front of them to draw attention to these details.

Not only will this add to the effect of the colorful elements in your room, but it will also make your space feel larger and add dimension. Mirrors can also be used to increase the amount of natural light in your space. Just be sure to place them strategically and not where the sun will glare directly off of them.
